St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated as a national holiday in only two places in the world – the country of Ireland, and the Caribbean island of Montserrat. The US Navy established a PT boat base at Morotai on September 16 when the tenders USS Mobjack and Oyster Bay arrived with motor torpedo boat squadrons 9, 10, 18 and 33 and their forty-one boats.

A single track, only suitable for off-road vehicles, runs from Kinloch and splits in two near the centre of the island.
